Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced on his social media pages that his government condemns the terrorist attack in Damascus, claiming numerous lives during Sunday service at a church.
In his Facebook post, he wrote that according to initial reports, one or more suicide bombers attacked hundreds of people attending a festive service at the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Elias in Damascus. “According to initial reports, dozens of people, including the priest leading the service, lost their lives in the attack during Sunday liturgy, and the number of injured is also significant,” he wrote about the tragedy. Our church partners have reported that the attack was religiously motivated,” the Minister added.
“The Hungarian Government stands with persecuted Christians, including those in Syria. We express our sincere condolences to the community that was attacked, the families of the victims, and their relatives. Through the Hungary Helps Program, we have launched 10 million forints in emergency aid for the medical care of those injured in the attack.
We strongly condemn anti-Christian violence and expect the Syrian leadership to do everything in its power to protect Christians and other religious minorities,” Péter Szijjártó said.
The politician also confirmed the government’s message on X:
Hungary stands with persecuted Christians in Syria and extends its sincere condolences to the grieving families,” he wrote.
Tristan Azbej, Hungarian State Secretary for the Aid of Persecuted Christians and head of the Hungary Helps Agency, also responded to the tragic news, stating that according to current information, at least 25 people lost their lives in the attack because of their faith. We mourn the victims and stand in solidarity with the persecuted Christians,” he wrote on X.
