The cathedral was destroyed during the Yugoslav Wars. Its condition, of great importance to both the Serbian Orthodox Church and the local Christian community, required extensive renovation work, which began in 2005 and intensified in March 2010. The contribution made through the Hungary Helps Program covers the preparation of the stone plinth, the reconstruction of the frescoes and plasterwork, as well as the conservation and restoration of the entrance, retaining wall, and gate in front of the church. This church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is not only historically and culturally significant but also serves as a symbol of trust and reconciliation between communities. In Mostar, a city that for years symbolized national and religious division, the functioning Orthodox church—located among several mosques and Catholic churches—is an important symbol of interfaith dialogue. The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, which reopened for the first time in 30 years in the spring of 2024 for Orthodox Easter celebrations, is also the subject of Tivadar Kosztka Csontváry's 1903 painting, Spring Opening in Mostar.
