Migrants living illegally in the Moria refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos have repeatedly attacked and desecrated local Christian churches and chapels in 2020, in protest at Greek authorities' attempts to prevent their illegal migration to countries further afield in Europe. As a result of the vandalism, many liturgical objects and church furnishings were badly damaged, in addition to the buildings. The Hungarian government therefore provided emergency aid through the Hungary Helps Program for the restoration of churches damaged by illegal immigrants, a task made more difficult by the fact that regular disturbances by immigrant groups in the refugee camp of some 13,000 people kept tensions high. In the autumn of 2020, the camp itself was set on fire. The funds were made available to the beneficiary community by the Hungarian government through the National Self-Government of Greeks in Hungary, and 3 churches were renovated with the help of the funds.
