Food security is one of the main concerns of developing countries. Extreme weather events due to climate change continue to put pressure on agriculture, requiring adaptation to improve resilience, especially among the most vulnerable smallholder farmers, who make up a large proportion of the population in many countries.
Agricultural and food security projects are a cornerstone of the Hungary Helps Program. These initiatives play an important role in meeting the immediate and ongoing needs of vulnerable populations, ensuring a stable and sufficient food supply, thereby alleviating hunger and malnutrition.
Hungary, a country with a strong agricultural tradition, has unique know-how in this field. Since 2019, the Hungary Helps Program has supported more than twenty agricultural projects in a dozen countries in Africa, Asia, and Europe.
By providing communities with the tools for sustainable food production, we enable them to cope with the challenges of natural disasters, climate change and conflict. Agricultural and food security projects are also essential for poverty reduction, enabling marginalised groups to generate income through agriculture, thus breaking the cycle of poverty and aid dependency. Supporting local communities in agriculture is the way to sustainability.
The emphasis on sustainable agricultural practices and food production contributes to the conservation of ecosystems and natural resources, which is in line with the sustainable development goals.
